REVIEW / A few days ago my great Rare-Kung-Fu-Movie-Dealer His Highness BigRogie sent me a strange movie: A Horror Movie with Judy Lee – my beloved Kung Fu Queen also knows as Chia Ling. Rare stuff, I think it is the only horror Movie she made. The movie was only in Chinese, the quality was very bad, sometimes you can´t see anything in the darkness, sometimes you can´t hear any clear sound. Because of these problems of technique and language I decided to write a short review in (my bad) English, I think this will be the right way to describe what I was undergoing…
First this: „This moving picture is especially for the Worldwild Animal Protection Association“! What´s this? Old school PETA warriors from Taiwan? Judy goes vegan? Very interesting…
Then I saw lots of strange Pictures. I didn´t check the story for real. Just describing: A kind of Ninja Duo is fighting in a cave, seems to be important, because this scene would be repeatet. Then the animal massaker against birds and especially the scene where the cock is enviscerated… Owls have a sad look at this, will they revenge the animal world?
Then a pregnant woman (it´s not Chia Ling, dear imdb!) gives birth to a special baby – half owl/half human. Her family isn´t very excited about this and the monsterbaby turns aggressive against the animal disturbing, intolerant mob in the village. Some wise people - a taoist monk and others – talk very important stuff, but without any result. Little Owl-Man kills more and more people…
Then there are other persons appearing: A man with a child on a horse and – finally after waiting half an hour – Judy Lee with a special bird-sword performance. But that´s not all. The Taiwanese Zatoichi (he looks very similar to Shintaru Katsu) gives uns a duel with a Shaolin Monk. I intended there are a lot of conflicts I don´t understand, so I preferred to enjoy the very cheap special effects in these scenes. The flying Owl-Baby! I was very frightened…
Then there were nearly ten minutes of total darkness with nice stripes in the picture. The adults are murdering themselves and the baby and the child become friends. I think I saw a little bit gore in the dark – a saw in the back. The demonic mother was killed. Judy fights with her sword against the baby, all in a cave. Suddenly people from the village appear to destroy the horror owl but a Shaolin monk rescued the baby and dissappeared while telling wise stuff – perhaps like“Do not kill animals in the future!“ or „Do not wear furs!“
I haven´t the faintest idea about this movie done by Liu Kuo Shiung, but I likes it and I have an idea that I have seen a masterpiece of special (trashy) Taiwanese Cinema of the 70s.
Thank you, Taiwanese Animal Liberation Fighters and BigRogie!
